About the Boston Red Sox
The 2008 Season for the Boston Red Sox has started off with a bang. The team is currently #1 in the AL East division with a 38-25 record. The season's still young; there are still many games and many tickets to purchase to watch this historic team battle it out on the field towards repeating last year's World Series Championship. A repeat would be the first in a decade since the Yankees did it in 1999 and 2000, and the Red Sox can pull it off with All-Star captain Jason Varitek at catcher and designated hitter David Ortiz batting in home runs. This year the team has seven players on their roster in the running for the All-Star team, but this team almost looks like an All-Star team. The team to beat undoubtedly, the Red Sox, put on a show every game filling up stadiums with fans eager to purchase tickets to see if this year their team will finally repeat and show the world that the Curse of the Bambino truly is gone.
The Boston Red Sox's lost and illustrious career began in 1901 under the name "the Boston Americans" under the command of manager Cy Young, who is still the team's all-time win leader. After a couple of seasons finishing just shy of the number one spot, the Boston Americans won their first championship in 1903. Several disappointing seasons followed, resulting in the owners calling for a change. In 1908, the name of the team was changed to the Boston Red Sox due to a red stocking which was part of their uniform. The word "sox" was used by sportswriters instead of the long "stocking" to make it easier to put on headlines. The Curse of the Bambino, the most publicized curse in the history of the world, began in 1920 when Broadway producer and owner, Harry Frazee sold Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees in exchange for a hundred thousand dollars to produce his musical "No-No Nannette." According to most die hard fans, as a result of selling Babe Ruth, the
Red Sox did not win another World Series Championship until 2004 when the curse was finally broken. The Red Sox, although starting their amazing history at the Hunnington Ave Grounds, currently play at Fenway Park and have played there since 1912. Despite the obvious antiquity and lavish history, the park has been renovated numerous times to meet today's technological standards. The Boston Red Sox's franchise accomplishments include seven World Championships out of eleven World Series Appearances in addition to twelve American League pennants.
